But following a new world record offer and a fresh suggestion from the 24-year-old wideman that he wanted to move to Spain, United have decided to cash in on the current World and European player of the year.
Real's £80million offer comes just days after they completed a £59million swoop on AC Milan for Kaka.
"Manchester United have received a world record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid," confirmed a club statement.
"At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.
"Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice."
Ronaldo has been at Old Trafford since joining United in a £12.24million deal from Sporting Lisbon in summer 2003.
